“We have put this burden and disgrace of the to-be THAAD base residents mainly because we are only 45,000 in Seongju. How on earth can we dump this filthy and extremely dangerous beast onto somewhere else of even fewer residents?”
In response to President Park’s remark of the possible change of the THAAD deployment location, the Seongju Struggle Committee for the Lift of THAAD Deployment Decision (Seongju Struggle Committee) re-confirmed its stance of ‘Against-THAAD Anywhere in Korea’ on the 5th declaring, “The government and the Ministry of National Defense must re-examine whether we ever need the THAAD in the Republic of Korea, beyond where to put it, either in Seongju or somewhere else.”
Seongju Struggle Committee on this day published “Our Response to the Discussion of Possible Location Change for the THAAD Deployment.” On the Response, the Committee criticized the government saying, “Defense Minister Han Min-goo promised to make public the evaluation and the result of the simulation of the scheduled THAAD deployment location, but he is not keeping his promise even after twenty days of his own remark. Now the government says it will find somewhere else. The government itself is overturning its own insistence that Seongsan is the best location for THAAD.”
The Committee urged, “[President Park] should dismiss Defense Minister Han who handled such matter as THAAD that may decide the Nation’s life and death with most haste, so putting pain on the people and confusing government administration. [President Park] should have the newly to-be-designated Defense Minister re-examine the THAAD matter from the very beginning, strictly keeping all lawful procedures.”
The Struggle Committee also warned, “We look straight into that the government’s ‘consideration of the third location’ is just an extemporaneous attempt to escape a sudden shower. We are seeing through that the government is suggesting not even a possible idea as an alternative to split up Seongju County residents,” and emphasized, “We will continue to shout ‘Withdraw THAAD’, not its re-location, and will never forget Seongju is the Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Korea is Seongju.”

1. We the Seongju residents are lightening our 23rd candles tonight. For the past twenty- something days, ‘The lift of the THAAD deployment decision’ is all we have shouted. We have put this burden and disgrace of the to-be THAAD base residents because we are only 45,000 in Seongju. How on earth can we dump this filthy and extremely dangerous beast onto somewhere else of even fewer residents? The government and the Defense Ministry do not ever put us the Seongju residents into confusion any more. 2. We have not just fought against the government for the past 20-something days. Embracing our children and crying, overturning our melon fields, we also have clearly recognized in great pain that the military independence of the Republic of Korea cannot escape from being severely exploited. We the county residents now demand: The government and the Ministry of National Defense now re-examine whether we ever need the THAAD in the Republic of Korea, beyond simply where to put it, either in Seongju or somewhere else. 3. The Ministry of National Defense announced that Seongsan (Seongju County, Gyungsangbuk-do) was the best spot for the THAAD on July 13. When we the county residents visited the Defense Ministry and strongly protested, Defense Minister Han Min-goo promised to make public the evaluation and the result of the simulation of the scheduled THAAD deployment location, but he is not keeping his promise even after twenty days of his own remark. And now the government says it will find somewhere else. The government itself is overturning its own insistence that Seongsan is the best location for THAAD. What We Demand 1. We demand the Withdrawal of the THAAD Deployment decision. The government, do not insult Seongju County residents through mentioning re-locating or anything as such. 1. The government, upon the will of the Korean people, stop trying to persuade the Korean people. Instead, try to persuade the US Defense Ministry in regard to the THAAD deployment. 1. Defense Minister Han Min-goo, resign right away for the responsibility of having caused huge confusion of government administration from the most hasted decision of the THAAD deployment.
