[추모]무하마드 알리의 베트남전 징집거부 연설
| 세계권투 헤비급 챔피언 무하마드 알리가 지난 3일 별세했다. 그는 권투 챔피언으로서뿐 아니라 독실한 이슬람 신자로서 베트남 전쟁 징집을 거부한 것으로도 유명하다. 알리는 1967년 4월28일 징병위원회의 출두 명령을 거부해 혹독한 대가를 치러야했다. 챔피언 타이틀을 빼앗겼고, 선수 자격을 정지당했으며 법원에 기소돼 5년형을 선고받기도 했다. 그러나 알리는 끝까지 뜻을 굽히지 않았다. 알리는 징집 거부선언 이후 반전운동이 한창이던 당시 대학 학생회의 초청을 받아 연설할 기회가 있었던 것으로 보인다. 유튜브에 올라와 있는 미국 NBC방송이 보도한 연설 내용을 소개한다. 번역은 민플러스 국제팀이 맡았다.[편집자] |
[연설 전문] “내 목표는 권투인데, 전쟁의 목표는 살인입니다”
우선 저를 오늘 밤 이 아름답고 소중한 행사에 초대해 연설할 기회를 주신 학생회에 감사드립니다. 또한 베트남에서 진행되고 있는 그 핏빛 전쟁을 멈추고자 하는 학생회의 위대하고 훌륭한 입장을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다.
무슬림 성직자로서, 전쟁과 폭력에 대한 제 견해는 이제 잘 알려져 있습니다. 그리고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 제 신앙에 기초해 제가 가장 좋아하는 인사는 평화이고, ‘아살라무 알라이쿰’인데, ‘그대에게 평화가 임하기를’이라는 의미지요.
저는 많은 질문을 받았습니다. 왜 입대를 거부하냐고. 몇몇 사람들, 아니 많은 사람들이 내게 입대 절차를 밟지 않으면 제가 너무 많은 것을 잃을 것이라고 지적했습니다. 나는 내가 아주 많은 것을 잃었다고 생각하는 언론들과 사람들에게 이렇게 말하고 싶습니다. 나는 잃은 것이 하나도 없습니다. 지금 이 순간까지 나는 단 한 가지도 잃는 게 없습니다. 오히려 많은 것을 얻었습니다. 그 중요한 하나는 내 마음의 평화입니다. 내 심장의 평화. 저는 지금 전능하신 신 안에 거하고 있다는 것에 만족하고 있고, 그 신의 정확한 이름은 알라입니다.
저는 또한 오늘 여기 계신 모든 분들의 존경을 얻었습니다. 여기 오늘 모든 분들의 존경뿐 아니라 전 세계에 계신 많은 분들의 존경을 얻었습니다. 입대절차를 밟으면 전쟁을 밀어붙이고 있는 소수의 사람들을 만족시킬지도 모릅니다. 그 절차를 밟음으로 인해 제게 미국의 부귀영화가 주어질지라도, 전 세계의 전쟁을 지지하는 사람들의 우정을 얻을지라도, 제가 내면적으로 만족할 수 없고 법정에서 전능하신 알라의 의지와 함께 하지 않는다면 그것은 여전히 저에게 아무 의미도 없을 것입니다.
신문과 뉴스에서 보도되는 대로 나는 이 땅의 법률 아래서 정의를 추구하면서 지금 법정에 출두 중입니다. 이 나라 미국에서 성직자들은 군 복무 면제입니다. 그리고 그들이 나를 선택한다면, 나는 무슬림 성직자이고 이슬람이라는 종교의 교사입니다. 그들은 내가 두 가지 선택권을 가지고 있다고 말합니다. 감옥에 가거나 군에 가거나. 그러나 나는 말하고 싶습니다. 또 다른 대안이 있고, 그 대안은 정의라고 말입니다. 정의가 승리하면 나는 감옥도 안 가고 군대도 안 갈 것입니다.
그들은 실제로 내가 링에 오를 때마다 어떤 면에서는 전쟁에 나가는 거 아니냐고 말합니다. 그들은 제게 (어차피)직업 권투선수인데 뭐가 다르냐고 지극정성으로 말합니다. 나는 이렇게 말하고 싶습니다. 그 언론비평가들과 다른 사람들에게, 링 위에서 싸우는 것과 베트남전쟁에 참전하는 것에는 엄청나게 큰 차이가 있다고 말입니다. 복싱은 총기를 들고 전쟁에 나가는 것과 전혀 아무런 상관이 없습니다. 그 둘은 전혀 다릅니다. 바주카포 수류탄 폭격기들과 말입니다. 내 목표는 권투입니다. 깨끗한 싸움에서 이기는 것. 그러나 전쟁의 목표는 살인, 살인, 살인, 계속해서 무고한 사람들을 죽이는 것. 그게 전쟁의 광경입니다.
제가 여러분들에게서 듣고 싶은 대답은 이것입니다. 그리고 전 세계와 모든 카메라들이 이것을 듣기를 바랍니다. 누가 세계 헤비급 챔피언입니까?(“무하마드 알리!” 함성)

| [영어 전문] First of all I would like to thank the student governing body for inviting me here to speak at this beautiful and worthy occasion tonight. I would also like to congratulate them on the great splendid stand to stop the bloody war that’s now going on in Vietnam, and as a muslim minister my own outlook on war and violence is well known by now. I would like to say that the number one greeting in my faith is peace and that is assalamu alaikum, which means may peace be done to you. There have been many questions put to me why I refuse to be inducted in to the United States Army especially as some have pointed out, many have pointed out not taking the step I will lose so much, and I would like to say to those of the press and those of the people who think I lost so much by not taking the step, I would like to say I did not lose a thing up until this very moment. I haven’t lost one thing. I have gained a lot number one I have gained a peace of mind I have gained a peace of heart I now know that I am content with the all mighty god himself whose proper name is Allah. I have also gained the respect of everyone here today. I have not only gained the respect of everyone here but worldwide I have gained respect from people all over the world, and by taking the step I have may have satisfied a few people who are pushing the war even if the wealth of America was given to me for taking the step the wealth of America the friendship of all the people who support the war this will still be nothing if I am not content internally and if I am not in court with the will of all mighty allah. As you read the newspapers and the press now you see that I am now in court. I am in court seeking justice under the laws of the land. In this country the United States of America, ministers are exempt from the armed services, and if they choose I am a muslim minister and a teacher of the religion islam. It has been said that I have two alternatives: either go to jail or go to the army, but I would like to say that there is another alternative and that alternative is justice and if justice prevails I will neither go to the army nor will I go to jail. They say that actually every time the ring in a way I am going to war. They say to me dearly you are a prize fighter whats the difference and I would like to say to those critics of the press and to the others that there’s one hell of a lot of difference in fighting in the ring and going to war in Vietnam. Boxing is like nothing like going to war with machine guns bazookas hand grenades and bomber airplanes. My intention is to box, to win a clean fight, but in war the intention is to kill, kill, kill, kill and continue ghkilling innocent people that’s what the vision is in war. I would like to hear this from you, and I want the world and the cameras to hear it: Who’s the heavyweight champion of the world! And I am very pleased and thankful for being here, and that’s all I would like to say. Thank you very much. |
